January 16, 2010 is a day that I would never forget! I was
just a few weeks into the spring semester of my sophomore year of college and
all of a sudden my mother had “a mental breakdown” and was eventually diagnosed
with Grey’s disease. This incident changed my life forever, and I can say that
I experienced tremendous growing pains. During this moment no one at my school
knew what I was going through, and I realized that my professors would not care!
As a full time collegian my main role was to attend class, put on a poker face,
complete my assignments, and continue being the scholar that I knew how to be.
Now that I look back I can pat myself on the back, and thank GOD, because I
played that role well. Yes I was hurting deeply on the inside because of my
personal life, but my professional career was just starting to blossom.
Sometimes you may hear people say, “There is always a light
at the end of the tunnel” and at this time I started to see the light for my
professional career. It was as if doors were opening just to prepare me for my
career path in accounting.
- Accomplishment # 1: Invited to join the Savannah State University’s College of Business Administration (COBA) Business Plan Team to assist with creating a financial plan
- Accomplishment # 2: Requested to speak on behalf of COBA at SSU’s 2010 Honors Convocation Ceremony in an arena full of faculty, staff, students, parents, and other guests
- Accomplishment # 3: Landed my FIRST JOB EVER with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as an bank auditing intern
- Accomplishment # 4: Maintained a 3.85 GPA
- Accomplishment # 5: Continuing to make my parents proud!
Now some people may not understand the sense of
gratification that I felt throughout this semester, but I was extremely proud
of myself. Not many individuals can say that they were able to persevere
through adversities, leave their emotions at the door, and yet in still exceed
their personal expectations…BUT I
can! Ultimately, what seemed like the worst part of my life turned out to be
the start to the best part of my future.
